Hugues Dufourt and The Origins of Spectral Music

March 22, 2017
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Buell Hall, 515 W. 116th St., New York, NY 10027 East Gallery
Marilyn Nonken considers the foundational principles of the spectral attitude, examining the contributions of composer Hugues Dufourt in relation to his training as a philosopher.  To come to terms with the philosophical scope of spectral music is to appreciate Dufourt's contributions and engage with a line of inquiry that has placed him, paradoxically, at a conspicuous distance from the movement he crucially defined. Marilyn Nonken is an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Piano Studies at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development. Zosha Di Castri is a Canadian composer/pianist and Francis Goelet Assistant Professor of Music at Columbia. Event co-sponsored by the Columbia Maison Française and Department of Music.
