Marilyn Nonken considers the foundational principles of the spectral attitude, examining the contributions of composer Hugues Dufourt in relation to his training as a philosopher. To come to terms with the philosophical scope of spectral music is to appreciate Dufourt's contributions and engage with a line of inquiry that has placed him, paradoxically, at a conspicuous distance from the movement he crucially defined.
