Peace Forum Session 2: Resist: How Global Movements Can Inform US Activists (workshop)

March 23, 2017
2:30 PM - 3:45 PM
International Affairs Building, 420 W. 118th St., New York, NY 10027 Room 1512
We're not going to end violence by telling people that it's morally wrong, says Jamila Raqib, executive director of the Albert Einstein Institution. Instead, we must find alternative ways to conduct conflict that are equally powerful and effective. In this interactive workshop, Raqib will facilitate an engaging conversation and lead participatory exercises focused on promoting nonviolent resistance for people living under tyranny — and there's a lot more to it than street protests. She will share encouraging examples of creative strategies that have led to change around the world and a message of hope for a future without armed conflict. "The greatest hope for humanity lies not in condemning violence but in making violence obsolete," Raqib says. Jamila Raqib works on pragmatic approaches to nonviolent action for activists, human rights organizations, academics and governments globally. She will apply this lens to the current US political climate and provide tangible tools for action moving forward.
